Multi-disciplinary teams that work together & train together to empower midwives with the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to meet the diverse needs of the mothers & families they care for.

All Trusts Are Encouraged To Develop And Train A Core Team Of Enhanced Care Midwives

These midwives have acquired further knowledge and competencies to enable care of more complex patients during pregnancy and beyond. It enables new families to stay together during a critical time in their lives whilst receiving the care they would otherwise receive in a high-dependency area. Our team of Consultant Obstetricians, Anaesthetists and Midwives have been facilitating this comprehensive training nationally since 2015. Our aim is to empower midwives with the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to meet the diverse needs of the mothers & families they care for.  Enhanced Maternal Care is here to support that challenge.

We are recognised by Health Education England (HEE) to share our expertise in maternal enhanced care with our passion to support organisations to develop their own enhanced maternity care teams.

Why do we need EMC?

The Ockenden Report examined 1,486 cases between 2000 to 2019 making it the largest enquiry into a single service in the history of the NHS. It raised 15 areas for “immediate and essential action” (IEA’s) to improve care and safety in maternity services across England. Enhanced Care for midwives has been recognised by the Royal Colleges as an essential aspect of maternity care that needs addressing by Trusts as evidenced by intercollegiate publications
